  • Dirty litter boxes – A dirty litter box can be the main reason why the cat is not using it and urinating on the floor. It might also have a cover which is keeping the odor of feces on the inside. First take a look at the litter box and then check it over. Even if you feel that the litter box is clean, take the time to clean it out again and sun it properly to remove any lingering odors.   • Spaying or neutering – Pets who have not been spayed or neutered have the habit of marking their territory. Unfamiliar new objects, new territory and materials are all sprayed to ensure that no one competes for it.
  • Anxiety and stress – Anxiety and stress are also prime reasons for a cat to spray everything. Try to reduce all external stressors and new people who are coming in to your home and be extra loving. It may work for a few pets but sometimes it does not.

  • Start by scanning your carpet with a powerful UV light or a fluorescent black light. Ensure that the bulb is long, at least a foot and the housing is included into the lamp. The UV light can help you find the stained patch in darkness and in a lit room. Ensure that you sweep the entire room to find all the contaminated spots.
  • If you can afford it, use a carpet steamer to steam the scent out of the carpet. Carpet steamer can also be rented for temporary use. Remember that the stain and odor has to be removed from the floor as well as the overlying carpet to prevent the cat from spraying the area again.

o    Listerine or any phenolic based mouthwash can be combined with hydrogen peroxide to use as a local bleaching agent on the urine stain. However, this might or might not work.
